how to eat dinner by yourself.

There comes a time in life when you get tired of other people feeding you all the time, and you just want to do it by yourself.

If this is how you're feeling, Maren is here to offer you a tutorial.

Eating Dinner with Your Very Own Spoon
by Maren.

First, you want to choose the right entree.  I recommend Spinach and Potatoes, which is very easy to see on your face. And hands. And hair. This way you can keep track of how much food actually gets in your mouth.

Next, grasp the spoon firmly. Some people will try to tell you that you should put your food on the little scoop side, but I say - do whatever feels right to you.

Like this.

You might want to practice a few times without any food on the spoon. Just in case.

See? Pretty good.

Now, it's time for the real thing.

Carefully put some spinach puree on your spoon.  Then put it in your mouth.

Don't worry about getting it on your face. Your mom or dad will clean it up. That's why you chose spinach, remember? It's easy to see. You were just making their job easier.

Be sure to examine the bowl carefully because you don't want to miss any.

Sometimes you have to abandon the spoon and go straight for the hands. Don't worry about it.

Scoop every last bit out of there.

I recommend flipping the bowl over just in case anybody has hidden anything on the bottom of it. You never know.

Just make sure.

See? Easy. Now you're ready to feed yourself.

Good luck!

Love,
Maren.

more conversations with maren

Maren is very chatty these days. VERY chatty. It's not her fault that her parents can only understand a few words of the conversations ("no," is quite clear). Maybe you can follow along better than we can.

snow!

Maren had her first big encounter with snow today, while we were visiting some friends up north. She wasn't too sure about it. It didn't taste very good, for one thing. And it was cold. But we had fun on our walk anyway!

old mcdonald had a dog. and a cow. and a dog. and a cow.

Maren has always loved music, and now she's starting to sing along. Her newest favorite, "Old McDonald Had a Farm," features a chance for her to name two animals: dog and cow. That's all poor Old McDonald has, in our house: a dog. And a cow. And another dog. And another cow. And so on...

i can do it myself

To celebrate the New Year, Maren decided it was time to try using the spoon by herself.  About 10% of the food manages to get in her mouth, but luckily she compensates by using her other hand to complete the job.  It's a little hard to describe in words.  Here:
